INDIVIDUAL OR FAMILY THERAPY:
HOW DOES ONE DECIDE WHICH MODALITY TO USE WITH CHILDREN?
Often, families who are interested in helping a child are unaware of the complexity of individual, family and child therapy. This workshop will address those different dynamics and modalities. Case presentations will be shared.
EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Participants will be able to identify the following items:
A. Several “individual” approaches to working with children
B. Several family techniques utilized in troubled families
C. Integration of individual with family techniques. This workshop will be enhanced with clinical cases.
2. The following points will be made:
A. Often when parents contact a child therapist, they are not aware that “fixing” a child involves parentaL/family participation.
B. The involvement of parents is sometimes problematic, but ultimately one of many factors which contribute to a child’s success in therapy.
C. Providing a safe therapeutic environment for a child is critical for the child’s growth.
D. Play therapy, biblio-therapy and art therapy will be discussed as possible child-centered approaches.
3. The following cases will be discussed:
A. Children who are from divorced families
B. Children who lie/steal/cheat
C. First born/oppositional children
