Treating Chronic Pain with the Science of Mindfulness

This course addresses a persistent driver of opioid use and dependence: chronic pain. While this course will cover some chronic pain basics, its main focus will be on the theoretical and practical application of mindfulness practice as a chronic pain treatment intervention. The presenter will provide a neurobiological theoretical understanding of mindfulness interventions. The presentation will then shift into a practical understanding of techniques for clinical practice of mindfulness with patients, both for teaching the skill and for increasing patients' motivation to practice.

About the Presenter

Shimmy Feintuch, LCSW CASAC-G is a New York City-based psychotherapist, professor, writer, and public speaker. He earned his Masters in Social Work degree from New York University in 2011. (His CASAC-G credential speaks to his specific education and experience in treating substance use disorders, including opioid use disorders.) Shimmy’s psychotherapy work, entering its 13th year, focuses on addiction (including opioid addiction), relationships, chronic pain, and stress reduction through mindfulness.

Shimmy has attended multiple trainings on Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, an evidence-based modality for treatment of chronic pain (among other issues). Shimmy has participated in multiple weeklong mindfulness retreats, and has been integrating mindfulness into his clinical practice for over ten years.

Shimmy has taught courses in addiction and trauma at Touro College’s Mental Health Counseling program, and is now teaching at Yeshiva University’s Wurzweiler School of Social Work. Shimmy lectures internationally (recently in the UK and New Zealand) on the topics of opioid addiction, chronic pain, and mindfulness, among other topics.
