Working with Queer/Questioning Teens and Adults in Religious Communities

The talk will cover working with Questioning/LGBTQIA+ teens and adults who reside in religious communities. The current available data on occurrence rates in the various community will be reviewed. Case studies will be discussed as they relate to queer/queer questioning teens and adults and how this population grapples with their religiosity and its intersection with their queer identity. The intersection between maintaining internal congruence as it relates to gender and religiosity will be explored.  

About the Presenter

Dr. Wallach is a licensed clinical psychologist and certified school psychologist providing therapy to children, adolescents, and adults. She specializes in treating anxiety, depression, mood disorders, ADHD, eating disorders, personality disorders, self-injury, and life transitions across the lifespan. Her clinical approach is evidence-based and integrative, with advanced training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), couples therapy, and emerging specialization in sex therapy. She is Gottman Level Two trained for couples work and is currently pursuing certification through American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists (AASECT). In addition to her clinical work, she serves as an Assistant Professor of Psychology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and as an Executive Board member of Nefesh International

Learning Objectives:

  1. The participants will be able to define terms related to LGBTQIA+ lifestyles and be able to have cultural competance
  2. The participants will be able to understand the conflict between religiosity and queerness/queer questioning individuals
  3. The participants will be able to help their own clients navigate the complexity of queerness/queer questioning as it relatets to religiosity

Agenda:

5 minutes- introduction

10 min- and Introduction to terms related to the LGBTQIA+ Community

20 min- Islam, Christianity and Judaism viewpoints on the LGBTQIA+ community 

2 hrs- Dr. Wallach's case studies on religious patients that she has seen/is seeing and the conflicts that arise

30 min- exploring how to create community for LGBTQIA+ individuals within established Religious communities
